2005 Mac Bible Software Survey Responses

100 Mac Users Speak Out About Bible Software.

by David Lang (Posted: 5/4/05)

The First 100

Each year, after CMUG's annual Mac Bible Software Survey has been closed, we post an article summarizing the survey results, and publish the text of each individual survey response (edited only to remove names and e-mail addresses). This year, we're doing things a little differently. Although the survey is still ongoing, we're going to publish the first 100 responses now, along with some basic statistical information.

We're doing this for several reasons. First, for those who are interested in reading the individual responses to the survey, publishing them a little at a time should make them easier to digest. Second, we're hoping that those of you who have not yet taken the survey will be motivated to voice your own opinions. And third, after two years we're finally getting better at managing all this information and gleaning meaningful statistics, so we're better able to publish them on the fly.

The Bird's Eye View

The following charts are designed to give you a bird's eye view of the current survey results. Obviously, these statistics will change as long as the survey remains open, but here's how things currently stand.

Please list any other Bible programs you use, and feel free to make any comments about them.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better in some ways; Windows Bible Software is better in others

Please Explain:
Accordance is a great program but could use more availiable text to make it an alternative to having physical texts. Logos is more of a catchall electornic library thus it is very useful as an overal library. Accordance on the mac has the best interface and fastest search which makes it the best program and most useful overall.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be

When you study the Bible using your computer, how often do you turn to this software?
     Always

What do you like best about this software?
Great searching abilities, fantastic lookup abilities (in the lexicons, etc), nice variety of modules available.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
Use unicode fonts internally, so I can change to nicer looking Hebrew and Greek fonts. Barring that, make the Accordance fonts look better on the screen. Include the bibliographic information for translations of documents. (Many documents in the Catholic collection currently lack this.) Improve headings in the collections (many documents have standard paragraph numbers which are not included.)

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
     A Hebrew grammar, like Gesenius.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Accordance is hands-down the best on the mac. Its searching ability and ability to dig deeper are unparalleled. It can be a little user-hostile, but version 6 is much better than previous versions.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better than that available for Windows

Please Explain:
The combination of great resources and pretty good user-friendliness in the newer versions of Accordance make it hte best choice.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?

     NET Bible

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
For any work with original languages I would have to recommend Accordance, although the situation will be more complex once competing products are released later in the year.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better in some ways; Windows Bible Software is better in others

Please Explain:
For the purposes of scholarly study of the OT, the abilities available in the SESB software currently surpass any other available software, largely because of the ability to search critical information and access the WIVU database. While this remains the case, Windows users have a clear advantage. If SESB is ported to Mac, this would (for OT scholars) have a decisive advantage over other packages for the Mac.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
     No.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be

No question, Accordance Bible Software. It is easy to use and well integrated with all that is needed for serious study.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better than that available for Windows

Please Explain:
Integration is superior than what I have used on a PC. The only down side that I see with Accordance is that it is limited in available new add-ons.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
I'd like to see more offered to add to my Accordance Software. It was wonderful when EBC and IVP series was added. By comparison, I think Logos offers a lot of unnecessary frills that may impress the uninitiated. I am looking for series commentaries and works that will help give greater insight into the scriptures.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
I simply recommend Accordance as it can be as simple or as involved as a person wants to make it.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better than that available for Windows

Please Explain:
Every time I look at what my "Windows brothers" have to go through I am convinced that there is not a program in the Windows world that can touch Accordance for ease of use and depth of information.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
None that I am aware of at this time.

Wait and see how good the new Quickverse Bible for Mac is when it is released. Until then, use the freeware MacSword program.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
I don't know enough to make an informed comparison

Please Explain:
However, Windows Bibles are cheaper. Accordance is way over-priced.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
Avoid over-pricing. Bibles are essentially text programs, and should not be as expensive as programs full of heavy graphics etc.

When you study the Bible using your computer, how often do you turn to this software?
     Always

What do you like best about this software?
easy to use interface, powerful, ability to make my own usertools, easy to type greek and hebrew

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
The ability to format user tools. I imported my dogmatics notes into a user tool. But it is in a huge outline format. So, the paragraph formatting is really ugly. Likewise, the ability to put tables in the notes and user tools would be a great improvement. The mapping module has much potential, but is very difficult to learn and use. This module needs to be streamlined

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
the addition of Lutheran resources (luther's works, book of concord, or some of the stuff which happen to be in this logos collection: ( http://www.logos.com/products/details/1753 ))

Concordia self study bible (as a decent study bible), Today's light bible (a good devotional bible)

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
If quality is your top priority, then go with accordance. If quantity and access to specific commentaries and other works, then wait for Logos.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better than that available for Windows

Please Explain:
Accordance is the program that brought me to the mac. I used Logos on my pc and hated the horrible, non-intelligent approach to the design of the program. I only have 8 to 15 hours to work on a sermon. I don't need to waste time opening and closing windows. Accordance was an impressively different approach to bible software. It had amazing features and excellent lexicons.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
     1. fight to get good resources, not just texts, not just good commentaries. Strive to get both. 2. continue to appreciate your target market: the mac user, the person who pays a little extra with the huge assumption that the developer would obsess over seemingly trivial things,( like the user interface)

When you study the Bible using your computer, how often do you turn to this software?

What do you like best about this software?
     The cost

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
It's flash based (or something similar) which means it's pretty set in how things appear. Being able to have multiple views open at the same time would be helpful

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
It would be great if more Bible texts were available, though I don't think it's necesarily the market they were looking for.

Which, if any, Bible program do you use in addition to your primary Bible program?
     Internet Bibles          Version:

If you chose "Internet Bibles," "Palm Software," "PC Software," or "Other", please give the specific program or site(s) used:

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS X (Native)

When you study the Bible using your computer, how often do you turn to this software?
     Mostly

What do you like best about this software?
     The multiple versions

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
It would be nice if it could take common spelling mistakes on book names and take a guess as to what I meant, particularily when there is such a limited number of books it has to figure out what I mean. (eg. I don't spell Habbakuk very often, but it seems like each time I spell Habakuk, I spell Habakkuk differently). I know I should learn to spell, but it would be especially helpful to take into account more possible abreviations, instead of shunting me to the Table of Contents page, which is especially annoying when I'm doing a multiple passage search.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?

Please list any other Bible programs you use, and feel free to make any comments about them.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
I picked up iLumina because it was inexpensive, and used some of the pictures and movies in children's groups and for preaching, particularily if someone makes frequent use of multimedia in teaching it would be very helpful.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
I don't know enough to make an informed comparison

Please Explain:
I haven't used much Windows software.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
I would have most likely purchased Accordance, as I had something of a software budget last year, but they didn't return my phone calls (3) or e-mail (1) with some questions I had. With that being the case, I didn't have much faith in an internet purchase incase something went wrong.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
From what I've heard of Accordance, it is really very good, but returning calls is essential. If Quickverse and Logos release software that is equally good, and accesible in Canada easily, they'll get my $$$'s on accesability.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Accordance is the only real choice for the serious student of Scripture who wants access to translations, original language, modern dictionary sets, etc.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better in some ways; Windows Bible Software is better in others

Please Explain:
Accordance is a better interface for doing word studies, etc. But Logos is indispensable for the sheer volume of resources available. Accordance is a working tool; Logos is a portable library that can fit on my computer.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
     No

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
Keep forging ahead on the interface and the production of resources at a reasonable price. I do feel that many of the titles for Accordance seem more expensive than the equivalent package in Logos... esp the sets

     Mostly

What do you like best about this software?
Easy to look up words and verses.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
I'd like a chain reference system like the Online Bible has where you click on a verse and it brings up verses on the same subject. I miss that a lot.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
     No

Which, if any, Bible program do you use in addition to your primary Bible program?

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS X (Native)

When you study the Bible using your computer, how often do you turn to this software?
     Seldom

What do you like best about this software?
Lots of references at an inexpensive price.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
I don't really like having to use Adobe Acrobat to use it.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
Perhaps some more modern works. Most of the Bible programs use such old works that they are often too out of date to use.

Please list any other Bible programs you use, and feel free to make any comments about them.
Love the Online Bible the most, but I had to stop using it when they didn't upgrade it to OS X. I don't use any classic applications anymore. I've been put off by the fact that they continually promised to bring it out and then we never saw anything produced.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
I think Accordance is the best one we have for OS X. I don't find it as intuitive to use as the Online Bible was. I really don't use it as a reference program as I thought I would. I use it more for just cutting and pasting verses for sermons etc. I find the interface to clunky and cluttered. I still hope the Online Bible will come out for OS X with an aqua feel to it. Accordance still doesn't seem like a native OS X program to me.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better in some ways; Windows Bible Software is better in others

Please Explain:

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
Price is what usually holds me back. I've invested a lot of money in Accordance and its modules, but I'd still switch back to the ONline Bible if they ever finish it. I'm interested to see what the Logos software will be like on the Mac. I don't like programs that are simply ported to the Mac, but look and feel like Windows programs. I want native, Mac programs that take advantage of OS X.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
Get more modern works into your product and keep the prices down. Pastors just don't usually have a lot of money to spend on this stuff.

What do you like best about this software?
     Has the resources I need.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
I also use chinese Language so I turn to MacSword, but it doesn't integrate modules well.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
UBS Translators Handbooks, Bible Study outlines and Questions, eg. Logos Lesson Builder or others for Youth, Especially Sunday School Curriculum.

Which, if any, Bible program do you use in addition to your primary Bible program?
     Palm Software          Version:

If you chose "Internet Bibles," "Palm Software," "PC Software," or "Other", please give the specific program or site(s) used:

In which platform do you use this software?
     On a handheld/PDA

When you study the Bible using your computer, how often do you turn to this software?
     Mostly

What do you like best about this software?
Portability and lookup when not near Mac or need to look at something not on Accordance

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
Bible+ = I would be willing to pay for some of the modules I use on Accordance or BibleReader Plus. BibleReader Plus = I would like it to scoll like Bible+ and be as fast, it is too slow AND the interface is lowres and outdated.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
NINTC by Howard Hendriksen as well as EBC and UBS Handbooks for the Bible+ 3.1.11

Please list any other Bible programs you use, and feel free to make any comments about them.
MacSword for Chinese at the computer(Palm Bible+ has Chinese)

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Accordance has the edge in resources and MacSword in that it is free, but the announcement that Logos will do Mac makes it complicated, thoughI believe they are way too expensive. all others previously I thought inferior to Accordance so I invested there and have been very happy.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better in some ways; Windows Bible Software is better in others

Please Explain:
I believe the useage of the Mac software and interface is better than the PC, but the available resources for the PC are far more numerous. and cheaper.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
$ missionary salary just doensn't make it possible to.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
Anything that is an e-book available for the Palm PDA's should be available. Most of those texts are essential reading and looking at Bible College and Seminary Course books should give an idea what people are reading or need to read.

In which platform do you use this software?
     Mac OS X (Native)

When you study the Bible using your computer, how often do you turn to this software?
     Always

What do you like best about this software?
The ability to look up different verses, words, etc. The ability to create my own 'Parallel Bible' by using different translation of the text in the same window. The 'floating window' that gives different information based on the link in the window.

What improvements would you like to see in this software?
The ability to more features similar to 'e-Sword'. The ability to add 'STEP' libraries.

Are there any specific resources (e.g.: Bible texts, commentaries, study aids, maps, etc.) you would like to see made available for this software?
Definately! I think it needs a TON more resources in every category. I realize that it is difficult to add and work on these features but, certainly, there should be a way that we can all work together and be able to use each others modules. I would like to see the ESV and NLT of the Bible added. As well as more Reformed/Episcopal/Anglican resources added.

Which, if any, Bible program do you use in addition to your primary Bible program?
     Internet Bibles          Version:

If you chose "Internet Bibles," "Palm Software," "PC Software," or "Other", please give the specific program or site(s) used:

What do you like best about this software?
The study aids. They are amazing.

The down side that I see on most of the Mac apps is the lack of modules. It seems that most of them ones offered are the same whether free or purchased (which I don't understand). In the Windows side of it, there are a lot more modules to their existing apps and more being added all the time. Again, I wished there was a way we could work together on this and not be like most other application companies. That is, only catering to one OS and not the other.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Mac Bible Software is better in some ways; Windows Bible Software is better in others

Please Explain:
There seems to be more features on the Windows side than the Mac side. I don't know if I would consider either 'better' than the other, but they both have their strengths. Right now, since I am using a Mac solely, I wished there were MORE features for the Mac apps. I miss them from my Windows days.

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
The biggest set back for any of the apps (Windows or Mac) is the price. Especially when you can see apps like e-Sword or Online Bible where most of their modules are FREE. I can't justify spending the kind of money some of these other companies are asking.

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
Work together to be able to use each others modules. The GUI will be different (and should be) to help with the taste of the individual but we need to help each other get the same modules for each app. That way the user can decide on the interface and not feel let down because of the modules.

If a Mac user were to ask you which Bible Software he should purchase, how would you compare the Mac Bible programs currently available? What do you see as their relative strengths and weaknesses?
Well, since none of the commonly used translations to swedish are available in Thml I would recommend them to buy the rtf version of Bible2000 or even better, download the free translation of Reformationsbibeln in pdf.

How would you compare the Bible Software available for the Mac with the Bible Software available for Windows?
Windows Bible Software is better than that available for Mac

Please Explain:
The windows versions tend to have been around longer and thus 'collect' more features during the years. In the future Mac-version will catch up. And pass!

Is there any Bible Software currently available for the Mac that you are interested in using but that you have not yet been willing to purchase? If so, what is holding you back?
Accordance. And now Logos. The lack of current swedish Bibleversions is holding me back. As so often before...

If you could give the various developers of Mac Bible Software one piece of advice, what would it be
Find out which versions are mostly used in the different european countries and include them in your deals. There are several versions available in every country and offer the copyright holders a percentage of the sales. Try with say three european packages; a scandinavian+english, a western+english and an eastern+english. Then perhaps both sales and customers can 'meet halfway'.
